This programme with Christian Thielemann, an expert in the late Romantic repertoire, is lush, almost intoxicating.

Veranstaltungen in Berlin: Christian Thielemann dirigiert Wagner, Strauss und Pfitzner
Matthias Creutziger

The prelude and Good Friday Magic from Richard Wagner's "Bühnenweihfestspiel" Parsifal are heard, as well as Richard Strauss' wistful, serene Four Last Songs with Camilla Nylund.

Comparatively rarely heard are the orchestral preludes to Hans Pfitzner's opera Palestrina, which are nostalgic, sometimes even archaic, but also of forward-looking power. His Prelude and Fugue in E-flat Major, orchestrated by Arnold Schoenberg, shows that the music of Johann Sebastian Bach can also sound romantically full.
