On the occasion of the 250th birthday of Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840), the Hegenbarth Collection Berlin is presenting a special exhibition: Paper works by the romantic artist from its own collection meet historical and contemporary works.
The focus of the exhibition is on the temporal and cultural development of the motif of "landscape". The works on display date from the 15th century to 2024. To accompany the exhibition, the art historian and curator Johannes Rößler will present the newly published letters and writings of Caspar David Friedrich.
The title of the exhibition, "Caspar David Friedrich - Found in Translation", humorously refers to the film "Lost in Translation" (2003, directed by Sofia Coppola). The focus of the exhibition is the artistic transformation and translation of landscape depictions within European art history, complemented by a dialogue with selected Japanese works of art from the 15th and 21st centuries.
