Kind of Blue
For her works in the exhibition Kind of Blue, Caroline Kryzecki had black grids screen-printed by hand onto paper. The fields of the grids are in turn subdivided into smaller fields, sometimes into 8 x 8 squares, sometimes into 4 x 9 rectangles, which in turn form a square.
She paints thousands of semicircular shapes, which look like conic sections, into the grid on each sheet with gouache or watercolour. Exclusively in blue. By changing the size and orientation of the brushstrokes and by modulating the shades of blue and the opacity and transparency of the paint, the works vary greatly despite their foundation in the grid.
An important influence for Caroline Kryzecki is music. She titled her first exhibition of raster paintings Counting Silence. It was reminiscent of John Cage. Now she has called her second exhibition Kind of Blue. And indeed, she exclusively used different shades of blue; ultramarine, indigo, Prussian, Parisian, sapphire or sky blue. Moreover, the title refers to Miles Davis' long-playing record of the same name.
