August Programme

Brotfabrik - Art Is Food!

The August program is set.

Although the series ¡A las Barricadas! Civil War and Revolution in Spain (1936–1939) ends on July 31, there will be two additional events in August: First, Oscar-winning director Pepe Danquart will present his early work *Die lange Hoffnung* (August 1, 6:30 p.m.); second, director Volker Hoffmann—due to popular demand—will return for another Q&A session on his new film *Cool on the Outside, but Burning with Passion on the Inside*, about the Spanish Civil War veteran Karl Brauner (August 2, 7:00 p.m.).

To mark the 100th anniversary of the publication of the bestseller *Das Totenschiff*, the documentary *Flüchtig* — The Mysterious Life of B. Traven (dir. Xavier Villetard) will be screened, and Ralf G. Landmesser, chairman of the International B. Traven Society, will be on hand to provide additional information and participate in a Q&A session with the audience.

On August 5 at 6:30 p.m., *Bike the Line* by Robert Tomschke will have its premiere. In this documentary, six fathers embark on an extraordinary bike tour from Wismar to Vienna—along the former demarcation line. Encounters with sports legend Täve Schur, eyewitnesses, historians, and people along the way weave the past and present into a compelling narrative about memory, responsibility, and the hope for peace. The film crew will be in attendance.

Director Florian Karner will be our guest on August 8 at 7:00 p.m. for a preview of his new film *Finding Connection*. The film explores our digital world, where genuine human connection is becoming a rarity, and features people who find solace in the algorithms of AI systems.

On August 21 at 7:00 p.m., director Hansi Breier will attend a re-screening of his film *Das Land, in dem ich geboren bin* (The Land Where I Was Born). A film about Romania, about the East and the West, about God and the world, about two monks and four Romanians. The film is a declaration of love for these people and an optimistic statement about the future of this Balkan country, which is largely ignored by the public. A timeless film essay that is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year with a theater tour.

Filmmakers Ronja & Ronny demonstrate that a German punk documentary can work even without Die Toten Hosen or Die Ärzte. Their documentary *Generation Y Punk* explores DIY punk in Germany between the years 2000 and 2020. It consists of three independent parts, of which *On Veganism, Gentrification, and Festivals* will be screened this evening (August 22, 8:30 p.m.). The screening will be accompanied by a talk: “Just Do It—How Leftist Subculture Comes Alive Through Active Participation.”

On August 30, one of the most significant figures in contemporary comic art will be honored on his 80th birthday: Jacques Tardi. As a tribute to him, the film *Tardi—Black on White* by Pierre-André Sauvageot will be shown twice (August 27 at 6:00 p.m. and August 30 at 5:30 p.m.). The director spent two years observing him and portraying him through his research methods and his way of working.
