The Winter Book of Love was originally written by Dora Kaprálová as a literary response to A Woman by the Hungarian writer Peter Esterházy.

The Czech author wrote a vignette about a man every day for a winter, with the thought that P.E. would one day enjoy the texts. (And he did.) It is a book about men, but perhaps only about a single, multifaceted and elusive man, because it is about love.

Nataša von Kopp translated The Winter Book of Love into German. The filmmaker and translator shows atmospheric film clips that match Dora Kaprálová's texts. The Czech original was published in 2014 and will be released again in winter 2024.
After the reading, the Czech Cultural Center invites you to enjoy Bohemian beer. It is a joint event of the mikrotext publishing house and the Czech Center in Berlin.
Dora Kaprálová was born in Brno, Czech Republic, in 1975 and lives in Berlin with her two daughters. The journalist and author studied dramaturgy and screenwriting at the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno and has so far published a number of texts on migration, integration, exile, communist heritage, Czech and European literature and contemporary poetry.
Her work has received many awards, including the German-Czech Journalists' Prize twice (2016, 2017). Her children's book "Mr. Nobody and the White Darkness" (Balaena-Verlag, 2023) was on the shortlist for the best Czech children's book. The same publisher has also published her "Berlin Notebook" (2019) and the short story collection "Islands" (2021). "Winter Book of Love" is her debut with mikrotext.
Nataša von Kopp was born in Baden-Baden and grew up in Germany, Japan and Czechoslovakia. Since 2008 she has worked as an independent filmmaker, photographer and lecturer in film and film history. She runs film and photography workshops with children, especially at the Academy of Arts in Berlin, and has been translating literature from Czech into German for several years.
Nikola Richter is the publisher of the mikrotext publishing house for new literature and texts with attitude. The publishing house was awarded a German Publishers' Prize in 2019, 2020 and 2023 and the Kurt Wolff Foundation's Promotional Prize in 2024.
