Songs and Piano—A Time of Uncertainty, A Time of Love
The programme oscillates between a sense of new beginnings and stillness, between the familiar that eludes us and the unfamiliar that gradually becomes our own. What it means to have no home in Schumann’s forests and yet to sing there nonetheless – that is the unspoken question posed by this evening.

The tenor Volker Nietzke, who hails from South Africa and lives in Berlin, brings an international perspective to the German lieder tradition.
Xiaohui Li grew up in China and obtained her Diploma in Performing Arts at the Hamburg Conservatoire – in the very heart, therefore, of the city where the German art song has had a special home ever since Brahms and Groth.
Xinmin Wanbao (Evening Newspaper of the New People) praised her as a soprano with “remarkable precision and artistic mastery”.
KaJeng Wong, originally from Hong Kong, is one of Asia’s most sought-after pianists – Martha Argerich called him “a special pianist”, whilst Claude Frank described him as the most talented musician of his generation.
Three performers, three stories of their origins, one shared programme – and an evening that demonstrates that great music is not created where one grows up, but where one arrives.
