People Pictures War

In her artistic work to date, Antonia Bisig (*1952) has repeatedly reflected on social and political realities. She examines how social power structures in particular become visible in the appearance of individual people - regardless of which side of the power divide they are on. In the process, however, it not infrequently becomes apparent that the shades of gray between victimhood and perpetration are numerous and fluid. The exhibition In Betrachtung shows large-format and multi-part works that have been created since the mid-1990s.

Using means of painting, drawing, and installation, Antonia Bisig analyzes the human body with regard to phenomena such as war, the military, structures of domination, the media, and ideals of society and the self. Analogous to these broad thematic fields, she deliberately chooses a wide variety of materials, design techniques, and forms of presentation in order to further sensitize our perception.

In the synopsis of works and series of works from the years 1995 to 2021, the focus is placed on subjective memory as well as contemporary historical developments and contexts in the past, thus establishing references up to the present. They address aspects of National Socialism, the Cold War with the development of nuclear weapons and the military conflict in the Balkans with the first genocide in Europe since World War II.

The exhibition pays special attention to the representation of children. And it gives reason to ask questions and opens up space for deeper contemplation of the present.
