Christa Böhme, Margot Sperling, Dieter Goltzsche, Harald Metzkes
Berliner Malerfreunde describes an artistic community that encouraged and supported each other. They argued about content and motifs. In the process, the autonomy of painting was emphasised again and again, also as a demarcation from the state guidelines of socialist realism and the dogmatism of cultural policy in the GDR since the late 1960s.
These artists came from different backgrounds. Some had studied in West Berlin, others came from Dresden. Discussion, stimulation and joint exhibitions supported and strengthened their own development as well as their public impact in society.
The new exhibition with Christa Böhme, Margot Sperling, Dieter Goltzsche and Harald Metzkes now provides further insight into the artistic work of this generation of Berlin painters.
