First and Last Quartets: Mozart, Smetana, Attahir

With his piano concerto Al Fajr (Arabic for dawn), premiered in 2017 by Daniel Barenboim at the Pierre Boulez Saal, Lebanese-French composer Benjamin Attahir began a cycle of ensemble works inspired by the five Islamic prayers for the various times of day.

The Berlin Staatskapelle String Quartet performs the third piece, Al Asr, which takes its title from the afternoon prayer. The program also includes Mozart’s final string quartet and Smetana’s First Quartet From My Life.

  • Benjamin Attahir - Al Asr for String Quartet
  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - String Quartet in F major K. 590
  • *** - ***
  • Bedrich Smetana - String Quartet No. 1 in E minor "From My Life"
