Gallery Tour of Charlottenburg
Around 1900, young, unknown artists (Max Liebermann, Walter Leistikow, etc.) who had been rejected by established critics and art professors founded the Berlin Secession on Kantstraße. As the city lay in ruins in the summer of 1945, the first galleries opened their doors here. During the Cold War, abstract art dominated. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, many galleries moved to the eastern part of the city. But for several years now, major galleries have been based here again.
On the tours, you’ll visit and discuss the most interesting art exhibitions of the moment (painting, installation, sculpture, photography, video, etc.) in stately Wilhelminian-style apartments, retail spaces, and/or courtyards. Your questions are welcome!
You’ll also hear about the history of Kurfürstendamm and its side streets, as well as the pubs and bars. This is a place where people work, shop, go out, and live. Charlottenburg’s galleries are located near creative hubs such as the University of the Arts, the Technical University, the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, the Renaissance Theater, and the Bar jeder Vernunft—pubs and bars where artists and actors are welcome guests. Come along and rediscover Charlottenburg/Wilmersdorf as a place of art!
