Medieval chants for the veneration of Mary
Monophonic Gregorian and polyphonic chants of the Mass and Liturgy of the Hours from various European manuscripts such as St. Gall, Moosburg, Klosterneuburg and Las Huelgas, three-part organa and conductus from Notre-Dame de Paris, motets from the Old Hall Manuscript, as well as pilgrim songs from the Llibre Vermell, songs from the Cantigas de Santa Maria and Italian lauds.
Devotional Marian worship was a flourishing and varied tradition in the Middle Ages, cultivated in monasteries and city churches as well as in associations of believers operating outside strict liturgies. The program features monophonic Gregorian and polyphonic chants of the Mass and Liturgy of the Hours from various European manuscripts such as St. Gall, Moosburg, Klosterneuburg and Las Huelgas, glorious three-part organa and conductus from Notre-Dame de Paris, motets from the Old Hall Manuscript, as well as pilgrim songs from the Llibre Vermell, songs from the Cantigas de Santa Maria and Italian lauden.
The Berlin ensemble Stella Nostra is dedicated to both the oldest evidence of notated Western music and the sound language of contemporary music, the richly ornamented monophonic Gregorian chorales of the 9th-12th centuries, the earliest polyphonic compositions, and contemporary vocal music.
