Lessing, Mendelssohn, and Nicolai in Frederick II’s Berlin: A City Walk with Michael Bienert (“Enlightened Berlin: Literary Sites,” 2022).

Where did the triumvirate of the Berlin Enlightenment live, debate, play chess, and write in the mid-18th century? Where did Frederick II house his guest Voltaire and have his own works printed?

The tour takes you to the homes and workplaces of the Enlightenment thinkers in Mitte and to places where their legacy lives on: Until 1936, there was a Lessing Museum in the Nicolaihaus. Nearby, the “House of One” is currently being built—a sacred structure dedicated to the peaceful coexistence of religions.
