Harrison Birtwistle, the face and voice of contemporary British music, wrote a short, intensive piece for woodwind and percussion in 2018 and dedicated it to Simon Rattle. Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 is monumental and stands at the crossroads between late Romanticism and New Music.

Composed just before the collapse of the »Old World« in the lead-up to the First World War, Mahler’s highly expressive music foreshadowed coming events, even if the past was also vividly invoked in the score.
