Brigitte Kowanz

The Berlin branch of max goelitz is transformed into a black light space for the solo exhibition 4≠4 of the Austrian artist Brigitte Kowanz (1957-2022) and presents for the first time a complete installation with her phosphorescent and fluorescent works.

In the early 1980s, Brigitte Kowanz began experimenting with black light and reflective pigments. Working with black light as a material and staging phosphorescent and fluorescent installations in black light spaces accompanied her artistic practice from then on for decades.

Brigitte Kowanz preferred white light in many of her best-known works, as all colors are bundled in it. With the use of black light, she questions visual habits. The space as well as the connection of the works to architectural elements emerge in a new way.

Brigitte Kowanz was awarded the Grand Austrian State Prize in 2009 and occupied the Austrian Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017. Extensive solo exhibitions of the artist were held at the Schlossmuseum Linz (2022), Museum Haus Konstruktiv in Zurich (2020), Galerie im Taxispalais in Innsbruck (2011) and Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig in Vienna (2010).
