It draws on interviews with Paulette Nardal from the Nardal sound archive compiled by her biographer Philippe Grollemund, the author of *Fiertés de femme noire: Entretiens / Mémoires de Paulette Nardal* (*The Pride of a Black Woman: Interviews with / Memoirs of Paulette Nardal*, 2019).
The performance unfolds as a fictional conversation with Paulette Nardal. Fragments of interviews intertwine with electronic soundscapes, improvised music and poetry. Nardal’s voice is present throughout and enters into a dialogue with other voices and perspectives.
The sonic experience creates a space in which the archive, the performance and the audience all participate equally in the staging. Sampling lies at the heart of the work: voices, breaths, pauses and fragments of speech are extracted from their original contexts and come together in new ways through altered sonic and rhythmic relationships.
The samples are played live on an SP-404MKII and complemented by field recordings, synthesiser parts and improvisations on the flute and voice.
