An evening of solo guitar recitals

The nylon-string guitar as a gateway to cinematic soundscapes: composer and guitarist Thomas MacMillan is a guest at TOR218 ARTLAB. His music oscillates between a sense of security and quiet unease, between nostalgic memories and the feeling of entering an unknown space.

Originally from the remote Pennine region of northern England, MacMillan has been active in Berlin’s independent music scene since 2018. Alongside his alt-rock project Carnivalesque and his collaboration with art-rock artist Kat Koan, he composes for solo concert guitar.

Inspired by video game composers such as Akira Yamaoka and Nobuo Uematsu, as well as the micro-genre ‘fogcore’, he explores atmospheric interstices, analogue horror and nostalgia. In doing so, he unleashes the impressive sonic range of the nylon-string guitar.

His repertoire includes pieces from the EP *Negative Space*, which deals with liminal spaces and eerie architecture, as well as his more recent release *Nervous System*. In this, each track is dedicated to a different facet of fear.

An evening to immerse yourself in, listen to and discover.
