Literature LIVE

What if the East isn’t the problem, but the solution? Charlotte Misselwitz, the daughter of GDR dissidents, describes the ‘moments of bewilderment’ experienced by people who lived and grew up under ‘real existing socialism’, and their somewhat different perspective on contemporary Western-influenced discourses.

Misselwitz shows that what is dismissed as reactionary often turns out to be part of a progressive legacy – be it a different perspective on equality, war, collectivism or freedom. A legacy that belongs not only to East Germans, but to all ‘refugees from a socialist past’ worldwide – and to all those who dream of a fairer future.

Charlotte Misselwitz was born in East Berlin and grew up amongst GDR dissidents and communist Jews. She studied literature and philosophy in Berlin and Chicago, lived for extended periods in Russia and Israel, and completed her PhD in 2020 on the stereotyping of Muslims in German and Israeli media.

The journalist and media scholar writes essays for publications including the *taz*, the *Berliner Zeitung* and *Deutschlandfunk*.
