Has hope for a better future been exhausted? How does one preserve inner and outer freedom when it comes under pressure? Bestselling author and journalist Sabine Rennefanz sees her 50th birthday as a turning point: she looks back on her life and the dreams of the child she once was.

Rennefanz tells of her mothers and fathers, of her origins and identity. Of her great love – journalism – which almost cost her her other love. And she recalls the moment in 1989 that she long considered the most important of her life. A moving and unflinching book about ghosts that refuse to be shaken off, and what remains of that anger.

Sabine Rennefanz, born in Beeskow in 1974, works as a journalist for publications including *Der Spiegel*, *Tagesspiegel* and Radio 1. She was a long-standing editor at the *Berliner Zeitung* and has been awarded the Theodor Wolff Prize and the German Reporter Prize for her reports and essays.

Her bestseller *Eisenkinder. Die stille Wut der Wendegeneration* was published in 2013. This was followed in 2015 by the novel *Die Mutter meiner Mutter*, in 2019 by *Mutter to go. Zwischen Baby und Beruf* and in 2022 by *Frauen und Kinder zuletzt. Wie Krisen gesellschaftliche Gerechtigkeit herausfordern*.
