From the Spanish grassroots committees of the 1930s to today’s Rojava – and beyond?

In certain historical situations, new opportunities for council movements repeatedly arose: people seized the chance to develop new models of social coexistence through self-organisation.

Viewed with the benefit of hindsight, they often appear as historical transitional phenomena marking the shift from one social order to another. In most cases, they disappear after only a short time, either crushed from without or having failed due to internal contradictions.

Drawing on recent book publications, the panel discussion will explore the limitations, but also the potential, of various council movements, both past and present. Linked to this is the aim of using an understanding of these examples to gain a clearer perspective on the opportunities for a future council movement.
