A double concert blending punk and free jazz
Luise Volkmann’s Punk-Jazz Project brings the DIY spirit of punk into the world of instrumental jazz with homemade noise instruments. In the second set, the international trio vehicle/passenger blends jazz, hip-hop and live electronics with the radical poetry of Marc Alberto. Two bands, two distinctive forms of political urgency – an evening at the House of Music.
LUISE VOLKMANN’S PUNK-JAZZ PROJECT
- Fanny Lasfargues – bass
- Luise Volkmann – saxophones
- Alwin Weber – electronics
- Oliver Steidle – drums
Even as a teenager, Luise Volkmann was part of Germany’s smallest autonomous centre, the JZO Oerlinghausen, where punk was central as an expression of a way of life and a political stance. She links this mindset to free jazz: urgency, political statement and collaborative music-making. Her new punk-jazz project with Fanny Lasfargues (bass), Oliver Steidle (drums) and Alwin Weber (electronics) combines unconventional compositions, energetic playing and noise instruments. The homemade devices bring the DIY spirit of punk into the world of instrumental jazz, creating an intense, unique listening experience.
vehicle/passenger
- Marc Alberto – poetry, saxophones, electronics
- Lesley Mok – drums, percussion
- Florian Herzog – double bass, electronics
Ethereal yet brimming with raw power: Vehicle/Passenger combine jazz, hip-hop and live electronics with spoken word in a compelling and exceptionally modern sound. This international all-star trio, comprising Dutch musician Marc Alberto (vocals, saxophone and synthesiser), American drummer and percussionist Lesley Mok, and Cologne-based double bassist Florian Herzog, represents a tour de force of artistic expression. Alberto’s reflective, radical poetry, which addresses, amongst other things, Black experiences of alienation in a white society, carves its way through dynamic, powerful improvisations, collective grooves and delicate soundscapes. Vehicle/Passenger’s live performances convey an energy and urgency that are almost impossible to resist. Their latest album, *Live in Amsterdam* (2024), is, according to *All About Jazz*, “one of the most honest and unique recordings of the year”.
