Can we learn from Rosa Luxemburg how to defend democracy today? She regarded bourgeois democracy – which was confined to the political and parliamentary spheres and had not been extended to the economic and social spheres – as inadequate.

For Luxemburg, true democracy required people to gain self-awareness and self-empowerment. ‘Learning from mistakes’ was her motto. Analysis, enlightenment and education were important, but she rejected ready-made political formulas and dogmatic leadership. She regarded mass strikes as a means of gaining political experience, preventing social regression and driving improvements forward.
