lack of empathy, and only realises over time that she loves him despite all his flaws. And so the ‘Diary of Adam and Eve’ ends with a magnificent declaration of love.
With his trademark wit, Mark Twain (1835–1910) depicts the beginnings of an
adventurous life as a couple, whilst listing all manner of clichés and prejudices that must be overcome before the commandment ‘be fruitful and multiply’ can be fulfilled. The fact that the two of them eventually find their way to one another is a rare blessing for humanity and for the listeners.
