Helene Weigel left behind an incredible legacy. From the ‘noisiest actress in Berlin’, who rose to become the capital’s theatre star in the early 1920s, to the artistic director of the Berliner Ensemble, who had old military equipment incorporated into the theatre’s set design. She was a woman of action who was never too proud to get her hands dirty.

With great sensitivity, director Maria Wischnewski also explores the private side of her highly political life.
Featuring new archive material, personal letters and accompanied by contemporary witnesses, including Katharina Thalbach, Johanna Schall and Manfred Karge, the film paints an insightful portrait of the artistic and intellectual symbiosis between Bertolt Brecht and Helene Weigel.
