The film tells the story of the extraordinary friendship that spanned decades between Hermann Hesse and the Swiss painter Hans Sturzenegger.

The focus is on their joint journey to the Indian subcontinent in 1911—a journey that shaped both artists in different ways.
Using stop-motion animation, historical imagery, literature, and music, the film blends art history and the present into an unusual cinematic collage. Following its spectacular world premiere in Switzerland and successful screenings in June 2026 at the Beijing International Book Fair and at the Swiss Embassy in Beijing, the project is now coming to Berlin.
At the same time, the film serves as a prelude to the major Hesse double anniversary year of 2027—marking 150 years since Hermann Hesse’s birth and the 65th anniversary of his death.
