By Friedrich Wolf
Slowly but surely, political conflicts, exclusion, and ultimately violence come to dominate his daily life at the clinic and at home. Yet Mamlock clings to the conviction that science, reason, and decency will prevail.
Mamlock, his family, and his colleagues witness the Nazis’ rise to power. Polarization drives them apart; trust gives way to interpersonal alienation; and opportunism replaces solidarity. While a few call for resistance and others submit, Mamlock tries to come to terms with the new circumstances—until reality catches up with him...
More than ninety years after its creation in 1933, Friedrich Wolf’s drama has lost none of its urgency. At a time when anti-Semitic, racist, and nationalist voices are growing louder once again, *Professor Mamlock* serves as a reminder of where exclusion and contempt for humanity can lead when met with indifference and fear.
The play explores political blindness and personal responsibility, fear and self-deception—but also the possibility of examining one’s own attitudes, actions, and courage, and taking responsibility.
