In 2014, Udo Jürgens passed away at the age of 80. Author Andreas Maier took this as an opportunity to write a subtle and humorous reflection in column form, in which he attempts to explore the void left by Udo Jürgens’ death.
From “Merci Chérie” to “Es wird Nacht, Señorita,” Maier explores the secret of Jürgens’ emotionality and, in passing, paints a portrait of a generation.
Udo Jürgens’ songs are an essential part of Patrick Wengenroth’s theatrical work. Through an entertaining staged reading from the book and a concert-style performance exploring the phenomenon of Udo Jürgens, he serves as the emcee:
Dressed in a tuxedo and a white terrycloth bathrobe, accompanied only by the piano and his voice, he explores what remains of Jürgens’ legacy today and what still moves us.
Accompanied musically by Matze Kloppe and directed by Georg Scharegg, a group from the early days of TD Berlin reunites on stage after a long hiatus. While mere nostalgia shows like “Udo Jürgens Forever” and “The Udo Jürgens Story” continue to fill civic auditoriums across the country even today, the trio is reviving an ad-hoc show format—one that has matured superbly over the past decade—to kick off the season in the intimate setting of the TD.
