First unveiling of the official portrait of former Chancellor Angela Merkel

For 16 years, Angela Merkel shaped German politics as chancellor. Now, the painter Jérémie Queyras has created a portrait of her. The painting will be on public display at the Bode Museum through October.

On the first floor of the Federal Chancellery, all former chancellors are immortalized in paintings. Former Chancellor Angela Merkel will soon be added to this gallery.

The French-German-Canadian artist Jérémie Queyras painted the politician. The work, completed in 2026, is on public display for a short time at the Bode Museum before taking its future place in the Chancellery Gallery at the Federal Chancellery.

The exhibition offers an opportunity to view the portrait in the museum’s unique setting and to reflect on its artistic design and its connection to contemporary history.
