In Search of Schöneweide's Lost Workers' Bars

Oberschöneweide once had more than 90 pubs—a veritable pub culture! Pubs have always been more than just places to drink; they were social gathering spots that played a central role in the daily lives of workers.

Starting in 1895, Oberschöneweide developed into a hub of Berlin’s electrical industry. Companies like AEG and, later, VEB Kabelwerk Oberspree employed thousands of workers.

After their shift at the factory, people would meet up at the pub. Over a beer, they’d relax and chat about the day’s events. But it was also a place where they could escape their precarious living conditions and organize the occasional strike.

Discover the traces of Oberschöneweide’s vanished workers’ pubs. After the tour, you can enjoy a cool drink on the terrace of the Industriesalon Schöneweide.

The tour is part of the Berlin Industrial Culture Festival.
