Max Liebermann between strategy and cultural policy

How did the artist Max Liebermann (1847–1935) become such an influential figure in cultural policy? What strategies and networks led him from his studio to the helm of artists’ associations?

The exhibition “Everything for Art! Max Liebermann between Strategy and Cultural Policy” at the Liebermann Villa on Lake Wannsee offers a fresh perspective on Max Liebermann: It explores how he evolved from a pioneer of modernism into a strategic cultural politician. The exhibition focuses on a previously lesser-known aspect of his work: his rise to become a central leading figure in the art world of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Liebermann thought internationally, maintained close ties with artists both at home and abroad, and worked tirelessly to bring modern movements to the forefront.

The exhibition focuses on how he masterfully utilized the structures of the art world to achieve his goals: the recognition of modern painting and the freedom of art.
