»There is no love of life without despair of life.« — Albert Camus

»if I was real from« is inspired by Albert Camus' early essay »L’envers et l’endroit« (Light and Shadow).

For Camus, light and shadow reflect the struggle between feeling and rationality — a tension that also forms the core of the piece.

»if I was real« explores the paradoxes and ambiguities of human alienation and isolation.

In fragmentary images, a mysterious world of hidden connections unfolds. What at first seems strange gradually becomes familiar — in ways that cannot be put into words.

The dancers immerse themselves in secret rituals, balancing between reality and dream. The choreography plays with illusion and sensuality without fixing itself to definite meanings. Sensory impressions remain open to association, preserving their original beauty.

Additional information

»Despair and love ... inspired by Camus – is the fitting description for this choreography. Early essays, Camus’ debut »Light and Shadow« from 1937, were indeed source material. But to visualize Camus, Toula Limnaios just said in an interview, is impossible. Echoes can nevertheless be found: light and shadow are here, in reference to Camus, to be understood as rejection and acceptance of the world as it is, as consciously experienced strangeness and celebration of its beauty, as despair of life and love of life, which belong inseparably together, as Camus says. A field of tension in which Toula Limnaios moves anyway, in her existentially grounded magical realism, to which poetry and drama belong as sisters. In her new choreography, however, she surprisingly leaves behind fate, pain and suffering and takes off into a round dance of festive wild beauty.«

»Janus-faced dance between thin lines ... spaces slide into one another … Quite astonishing how Toula Limnaios and her company, based in the HALLE Tanzbühne Berlin, reinvent themselves again and again. Thus the eight interpreters wander in a three-part divided stage space between worlds. … The protagonists in the polyphonic solo and group images bear little resemblance to lone fighters, to shattered individuals exhausting themselves in opposition. No, in this new work Toula Limnaios permanently dissolves the powerful unison formations. She creates sensual movement reflections of fleeting, sensitive beauty.

The versatile company ›cie. toula limnaios‹ gives us a danced essay inspired by Camus’ »L’envers et l’endroit / Light and Shadow« about possibilities of being. Quiet, mysterious, open to new perspectives, a little crazy.«
