There are bands that do far more than just make music – they hold a mirror up to their society. Sleaford Mods, the electro-punk duo from Nottingham, are just one of them. Jason Williamson, who struggled through life after failed acting and band projects, found his unmistakable voice in rap.
Andrew Fearn provides the lo-fi beats, bass lines, and minimalist loops that drive Williamson's blunt lyrics. The result is a sound that defies categorization – somewhere between post-punk, electronic music, and hip-hop. Their songs aren't slogans, but rather spotlights on a country in crisis mode: post-Brexit frustration, inflation, political disenchantment, and a shift to the right.
Their last album, UK Grim (2023), was already an angry commentary on the present. Now they're back with the new single "Megaton" – a driving track full of energy, the proceeds of which go entirely to the children's charity War Child. The accompanying video, directed by Nick Waplington, was filmed at London's Speakers' Corner, the historic site for free speech and protest.
Despite all their dramatic nature, Sleaford Mods are one thing above all else: electrifying live. Williamson's angular East Midlands accent crashes over Fearn's beats like metal on concrete—raw, furious, direct. It's no wonder that collaborations with acts like The Prodigy, Leftfield, and Hot Chip have long been part of their history. Their full power is unleashed on stage—concerts you won't forget.
