The first artists' ball took place in the 1890s as a counterpart to the absurdly lavish court balls of the late Wilhelmine period, which stood in stark contrast to the living conditions of the rest of the population.

We know about the balls from the paintings of Adolph von Menzel and those of the notorious director of the Academy of Arts, Anton von Werner, who refused women access to study and whose house still stands across the street from Potsdamer Straße today.

This ball was therefore invented under the direction of Käthe Kollwitz, defying all conventions, as a free masked ball. Women dressed up, men were welcome, dressed as women! The aim was to counter the times and ‘despite everything’ with something joyful.

This is also how we understand our celebration in the ‘present day’, in which small and large powers are violently redividing the world and humanity no longer seems to play a role. Recently, an elderly lady friend said to us: ‘Being cheerful is something you have to learn early on, then you can do it when you really need it!’

With this in mind, we invite you to an exuberant, joyful ball of the finest kind with live music by Schnaftl Upschik, Senor Depressivo and many more, and the artists' crazy costumes!
