With a large-scale retrospective, the Berlin dance collective laborgras is celebrating its 25th anniversary in Berlin – looking not only back, but also forward to the future with curiosity.
What began as an artistic initiative centred around dancers and choreographers Renate Graziadei and Arthur Stäldi has developed over the years into an established fixture within Berlin's independent dance scene. Since its founding in 1994, laborgras has stood for experimental contemporary dance, artistic boundary-pushing and an open dialogue between body, space, sound and audience.
25 years of laborgras in Berlin – A retrospective between body, sound and time – the crowning finale will be the production ‘sinnestaumel’ from 23 to 26 October.
‘sinnestaumel’ is a finely tuned dialogue between baroque music and contemporary dance.
To the sounds of Johann Sebastian Bach's sonatas for violin and harpsichord (BWV 1014–1019), played live by Midori Seiler and Christian Rieger, a vibrant resonance chamber is created in which music, light and movement merge into a dense physical experience. The retrospective highlights what has distinguished laborgras since its inception: an uncompromising search for new forms of expression, openness to artistic experimentation and an unconditional desire to understand dance as a living field of research. In a constantly changing world, laborgras persistently asks: What is dance – and what can it be?
