In 2026, the Alte Nationalgalerie is honouring Paul Cassirer (1871–1926), one of the most important art dealers of his time.

Cassirer and the breakthrough of Impressionism at a glance

In his role as a mediator of French Impressionism, he played a significant part in bringing artists such as Degas, Cézanne, Manet, Monet, Pissarro, and van Gogh to prominence within the German cultural landscape. Through his passionate efforts, their works found their way into German museums and collections, including that of the Nationalgalerie.

Cassirer was also enthusiastic about German Impressionism and supported the Berlin Secession with artists like Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth, and Max Slevogt. Additionally, he promoted the young avant-garde with artists such as Ernst Barlach, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paula Modersohn-Becker, and Edvard Munch.

The exhibition features over 100 outstanding works of Impressionism and Classical Modernism, highlighting Cassirer's impressive commitment to art.
