The former fishing village of Rahnsdorf
Fishermen and ferrymen
Take a step back in time and experience Berlin's history up close in the listed fishing village of Rahnsdorf, with its cobblestones, chestnut trees and views of the Spree.
The cobbled streets, old chestnut trees along the way and hundred-year-old buildings behind wrought-iron fences. The old, listed fishing village of Rahnsdorf is a tranquil place. It is idyllically situated at the mouth of the Spree into the Müggelsee. The perfect excursion destination, not just for Berliners.
A fishing village for more than 500 years
Rahnsdorf has a horseshoe shape around its village church, which can be easily spotted from the Müggelspree. The village church, which characterises the historic centre of the village, was rebuilt between 1886 and 1888 - on the ruins of the previous church, which was destroyed by fire.
the Slavic village was first mentioned in a document in 1375. The village burnt down almost completely in 1872, but was rebuilt.
The village street and the so-called "Dorfanger" (the central square) with its houses are now listed buildings.
Around 100 years later, Rahnsdorf was granted fishing rights - and still has them today. Every morning, fisherman Andreas Thamm goes out on the Müggelsee at around 5 a.m., and has been doing so for over 35 years. On summer weekends, he fires up the smoker and sells his fresh fish to day-trippers. Eel, trout and carp are on the menu.
Not far from the fish smokehouse is the landing stage for the hand-operated ferry F24. The ferryman rows 36 metres to cross the Müggelspree with his guests and reach the Müggelwiesen meadows opposite. From here, you can go on a cycling or hiking tour around the Müggelsee or up the Müggelberge. The second, slightly larger and solar-powered ferry F23 takes its crew to Müggelhort and Müggelwerderweg. Both depart once an hour during the summer months. Directly after the ferry crossing with the F24, you can access hiking trails around the Müggelsee or up to the Müggelberge.
From Rahnsdorf to New Venice
Rahnsdorf is not just a destination for hikers and cyclists. A day on the water is just as worthwhile. Take a canoe, SUP or a small motorboat along the canals in Neu Venedig , past well-tended weekend properties and grey herons that don't let anyone disturb them. Sometimes all you hear is the water gurgling in front of the bow. At Müggelsee at the latest, you should jump into the cool water and take a dip. And the best thing is: if your stomach is rumbling after paddling and frolicking in the water, stop off at fisherman Andreas Thamm. His smokehouse has a berth especially for water sports enthusiasts.
