Lake Müggelsee

Berlin’s largest lake

Bathing, paddling and hiking have been done here all along. The lake counts, especially in summer, to one of the most popular excursion destinations of Berlin.

Its deepest end was measured at close to eight meters. It is four and a half kilometres in length, two and a half kilometres wide, and Berlin’s largest lake: the Müggelsee. There are three large official bathing areas along the shore: the lake resort Friedrichshagen, the lido Müggelsee (currently undergoing renovation) with the bordering FKK beach as well as the bathing beach at the small Müggelsee.

The museum in the waterworks is located on the northern shore of the lake. The plant was put into operation in 1893 and is still used today to supply Berlin with water. Among other things, visitors can see the original machine hall with its piston steam engines. And on the other side of the lake, to the south-east, lies the fishing village of Rahnsdorf, with its idyllic cobbled streets and old chestnut trees. The last professional fisherman on Lake Müggelsee sells freshly caught fish in the immediate vicinity of the landing stage.

For a relaxing break after a walk around the Müggelsee or after a canoe tour, the Rübezahl am Müggelsee in the south is the perfect place. It has a wonderful beer garden in summer and an ice rink and cosy restaurant in winter.
