Theater unterm Dach

Independent theatre in historical surroundings

Theater unterm Dach is the stage for up-and-coming stage talent. The calendar includes a wide range of theatre projects from newly discovered directors and artists.

The theatre under the roof is located at a prominent site on the edge of Ernst-Thälmann-Park, directly on Danziger Straße in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg district. The site, which originally housed Berlin's municipal gasworks, was converted for a new cultural use in 1986 - the structures of the old factory buildings are still recognisable to observant visitors.

The theatre hall offers space for up to 80 spectators. A small bar serves aperitifs and snacks, which can also be enjoyed on the balcony of the theatre foyer on nice days.

Talent promotion and awards

The Theater unterm Dach is committed to supporting the independent theatre scene: It exclusively shows freely produced theatre projects. Anyone reading the programme will therefore rarely come across well-known plays, but rather productions by newly discovered directors and as yet unknown artists. The theatre is thus pursuing its clear aim of actively promoting young talent and up-and-coming directors. The open collaboration between artists and the theatre is highly appreciated by both theatre-goers and decision-makers in the industry. The plays are regularly awarded prizes for their high level of professionalism and can often be found in the programmes of various theatre festivals in Berlin.

A cultural centre in Ernst-Thälmann-Park

As a municipal venue, the theatre under the roof is supported by the district of Berlin-Pankow. It is part of a lively cultural centre on the grounds of Ernst-Thälmann-Park, which comprises several institutions with different profiles:

  • WABE: A trendy meeting place and popular venue for live concerts.
  • galerie parterre: An important forum for contemporary art.
  • jungeKunstWerkstätten: Offers art activities and theatre courses for children and young people.

These institutions are part of the so-called Kulturhaus in Ernst-Thälmann-Park. They are also housed in former factory buildings that have been renovated and converted for new use. Project funding is provided by the Office for Further Education and Culture, whose Department of Art and Culture is also located on this site.
