F40 - English Theatre Berlin & Theater Thikwa
Two theatres in one building
Two in one: the F40 in Kreuzberg is home to both the English Theatre Berlin and the Thikwa integration theatre .
Theaterhaus F40 in Berlin-Kreuzberg is home to two unique and successful ensembles: the English Theatre Berlin (ETB), Berlin's only exclusively English-language stage, and Theater Thikwa, a renowned integration theatre.
English Theatre Berlin (ETB)
Today, the programme of the English Theatre Berlin gives the theatre its name. It has been known since 1990 as a multilingual theatre under the name Friends of Italian Opera, named after the cover name of the Mafia in the cult film Manche mögen's heiß. After the theatre specialised exclusively in plays in English, the name was changed to English Theatre Berlin (ETB) in 2006. The programme is wide-ranging and offers everything from classics to new discoveries, from spoken theatre to comedy - the main thing is that it is performed in English. The programme also includes numerous in-house productions. The ETB is regularly represented at theatre festivals and maintains close relationships with international institutions such as the British Council, the US Embassy and the Irish Arts Council, which has already resulted in numerous international guest performances. Various workshops are also offered for school classes.
Theatre Thikwa
At Thikwa Theatre, actors with and without disabilities work together on the plays, showing the similarities and differences between disabled and non-disabled performers. In addition to acting, the programme also includes performance, music, speech and dance. The theatre has been promoting the joint artistic work of people with disabilities and non-disabled artists since 1990. The social experiment Theater Thikwa, whose name comes from the Hebrew word for hope, has established a firm place for itself in the Berlin theatre scene. The ensemble moved into its first permanent venue in 2005 and has shared the stage with ETB at F40 ever since.
The stages at the F40
The F40 theatre house has two venues. The large stage offers space for 90 to 140 spectators and is barrier-free. The theatre also has a studio stage with a capacity of 50 to 70 seats.
