Every year, around 700,000 guests attend the theatre’s own Grand Shows and Young Shows. This makes the Palast Germany’s most-visited theatre. From theatre to show stage: the history of the Friedrichstadt-Palast

Friedrichstadtpalast

Today, the term ‘Friedrichstadt-Palast’ refers to both the building and the revue theatre. This was not always the case, as the original building was situated about 200 metres further on. In 1867, that site was still a market hall, into which the Markthallen-Circus moved in 1873. Max Reinhardt took over the building in 1919 and opened a branch of his Deutsches Theater there, which was given the promising name Großes Schauspielhaus. This name proved particularly apt in the 1920s, when greats such as the Comedian Harmonists performed there. During the Nazi era, the theatre was forced to close.

It was only after the end of the Second World War that the Friedrichstadt-Palast truly became the Friedrichstadt-Palast: the theatre was renamed. In the GDR, it was an important venue in East Berlin for major stars, including Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. By 1980, however, the building’s foundations had deteriorated to such an extent that it had to be closed. It was only then that the new Friedrichstadt-Palast was built on its current site. There, on Friedrichstraße in Mitte, it still stands today.
