On 23 September, you are invited to the next THFxGESCHICHTE discussion: “A mutual perspective across the Atlantic: understanding Germany and the USA”.
Sports history is contemporary history. This applies equally – and indeed even more so – to basketball, which underwent a period of enormous upheaval at the end of the Cold War. Using basketball as an example, we therefore examine historical upheavals in sport, politics and society. Why did Alba Berlin emerge as a club representing the whole of Berlin in the wake of reunification, whilst the city remains divided between East and West when it comes to other sports? What role did the laid-back ‘freespace’ culture play in the global basketball boom of the 1990s?
During the storytelling evening, the audience will have the opportunity to discuss these and other questions with prominent guests, such as Marco Baldi, CEO of ALBA Berlin, and Henning Harnisch, Vice-President of ALBA Berlin and a long-serving international player, and to share their own experiences. The event will be rounded off with a visit to the basketball court above the reception hall of the former Tempelhof Airport, which was used by the US Army until 1989/90.
