Architect Louisa Hutton from Sauerbruch Hutton in Berlin will be exploring the question WHAT CAN ARCHITECTURE DO FOR YOU? from the perspectives of sustainability, contextuality and sensuality, drawing upon selected projects from the last thirty years.

Her presentation will be followed by a discussion with London- and Berlin-based artist Wolfgang Tillmans, whose way of working – ranging from photography to music – stands for a politically engaged view of the world.

The evening will be moderated by Elke Buhr, editor-in-chief of Monopol magazine, a publication that explores contemporary art, architecture, fashion, design and pop culture.

Founded in 1988/89 in London by Louisa Hutton (b. 1957) and Matthias Sauerbruch (b. 1955), Sauerbruch Hutton made its name in the 1990s with its renovation and extension of the office-tower headquarters of the GSW housing association in Berlin. The resulting complex is considered a prototype of ecological architecture. With a delight in experimentation, the architectural practice has since continued to develop its creative response to the requirements of sustainable building, and its sensitive approach to the urban context, in a host of projects located primarily in Europe.

The buildings by Sauerbruch Hutton are rigorous and at the same time sensual, whether owing to their surprising shapes or the vibrant colours notably of their façades, as in the case of the Federal Environment Agency in Dessau (2005) and the Brandhorst Museum in Munich (2009), or through a particular choice of materials. More recently, recycled or prefabricated structural elements and timber have been employed, for example at the Berlin Metropolitan School (2020) and the new headquarters for Médecins Sans Frontières in Geneva (2022).For over thirty years, the work of Wolfgang Tillmans (b. 1968) has pushed the boundaries and possibilities of image-making. Tillmans’ practice pairs intimacy with social critique and the questioning of existing values and hierarchies.

Since the 2000s, the artist has continuously created new visual worlds of abstract photography. His oeuvre is also characterised by a particular interest in architecture, as witnessed by the group of works “Aufsicht/View from above”, ongoing since the late 1990s, and his video installation “Book for Architects”, which was first shown in 2014 at the Venice Architecture Biennale. Combining 450 photographs taken by Tillmans over a period of ten years in 37 countries, “Book for Architects” portrays the randomness, imperfection and beauty of our built environment from the artist’s personal point of view.

Hutton and Tillmans – both rooted in Berlin and London – are linked by the fact that, for the past three decades, they have respectively helped to shape architecture and art, and thus our shared culture, in forward-looking fashion, through their critical but profoundly humane stance and their responsible approach to design.
