Fragment by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Goethe’s fragment from his Sturm und Drang period describes humanity’s susceptibility to losing itself in hubris, to overstepping the boundaries of scientifically determined action, to disregarding moral limits, and to the consequences of reckless behavior driven by a craving for recognition; as such, it is as relevant today as it was then.
Stylistically rooted in the theatrical elements of a fairground spectacle, puppet and mask plays, and complemented by live acoustic music, the production juxtaposes dramatic and comedic elements.
In this way, Goethe’s original, unpolished, and still raw scene fragment is examined for its timeless modernity and topical relevance for a contemporary, diverse audience, with the aim of exemplifying the infinite nature of human flights of fancy and downfalls.
