In Berlin, the JULIA STOSCHEK FOUNDATION is presenting a collection of works by 35 artists from the 1960s to the present, who deal with the interfaces between performance and video. The group exhibition entitled "Unbound: Performance as Rupture" examines how artists at different times have related the body to the camera. In doing so, they have rejected oppressive ideologies, disrupted historical narratives and shattered concepts of identity.

This exhibition brings works from the Julia Stoschek Collection into a dialogue with loans and traces various interfaces between performance and video art from the 1960s to the present day. There is a special focus on representations of fractures, interruptions and destruction.

The emergence of performance art in the middle of the 20th century shook western understanding of art through the merging of art object, artist and action. This striving for the liberation of art through the body is a common motif behind the different approaches of the works on display. At the same time, the young video technology brought about a significant change in the way motion was recorded, edited, played back and presented around the same time. This shift connects the early experiments with video art with today's uses on social media and beyond.

The exhibition creates a dialogue between historical works by artists such as Eleanor Antin, Peter Campus, VALIE EXPORT, Sanja Iveković, Ulysses Jenkins, Joan Jonas, Lutz Mommartz, Senga Nengudi, Howardena Pindell, Pope.L and Katharina Sieverding as well as works by a younger artist Generation of artists such as Panteha Abareshi, Ufuoma Essi, Shuruq Harb, Tarek Lakhrissi, mandla & Graham ClaytonChance, Lydia Ourahmane, Sondra Perry, Akeem Smith and P.Staff.

A publication will accompany Unbound: Performance as Rupture, containing a general introduction and short texts relating each artwork to the exhibition's themes (available free of charge when visiting the exhibition). Public talks, screenings and a podcast are also planned to further illuminate and deepen the ideas of the exhibition.
