For many, the film ‘Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella’ is as much a part of Christmas as the twinkling of the candles on the tree, and is therefore an integral part of the festive programme.
For it is the little magical moments that make this enchanting love story so special:
the three magic hazelnuts that grant Cinderella’s wishes, the snow-covered landscapes, the festive ball – and, of course, the moment when the prince discovers the dainty shoe on the stairs.
But it is not only on television that the fairy tale works its magic:
For several years now, this Christmas classic has regularly filled concert halls to capacity, where the stages are transformed into a fairy-tale setting for this romantic love story.
Whilst the film plays on the big screen, a large symphony orchestra accompanies the scenes with the familiar melodies, making the audience feel almost as though they are guests at the court ball themselves.
The soundtrack by the Czech composer Karel Svoboda played a key role in the film’s success – shortly after its release, Svoboda received international commissions and later composed the unforgettable melodies for animated classics such as ‘Maya the Bee’, ‘Wickie’ and ‘Nils Holgersson’.
Yet it is the music for “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella” in particular that retains a special magic to this day and evokes a feeling of pure happiness in listeners – almost as lovely as the anticipation of the festivities.
