Sky Islands
With her project *Sky Islands*, composer, percussionist, and sound artist Susie Ibarra makes her debut at the Pierre Boulez Saal. The work, for which Ibarra was awarded the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Music, draws its inspiration from the so-called “sky islands”—unique ecosystems found in the mountain rainforests of Luzon in the Philippines, the composer’s homeland.
Conceived for eight musicians, Ibarra’s work combines a conventional musical score with Filipino gong and bamboo instruments, creating a “garden of sounds.”
“Sky Islands” is a musical call to preserve the Earth’s biodiversity and raise awareness of climate change.
