Berlin – a film by Carl Froelich, Germany 1928
Carl Froelich is filming *Zuflucht* on location in Berlin in the realist style. He is portraying the lives of ordinary, working-class people, which are otherwise rarely depicted in films. You see the workers’ accommodation, their kitchen-diners, market halls, third-class hospitals, and the construction of Underground Line 6 through Tempelhofer Feld.
In this way, “Zuflucht” offers a quasi-documentary glimpse into life in Berlin in the late 1920s, away from the glitz and glamour of show business, whilst at the same time telling a deeply moving story. Because of his involvement in the 1918–19 revolution, Martin (Franz Lederer) flees Germany and only returns to Berlin eight years later: weary, lonely, penniless and worn out. He finds refuge with the market vendor Hanne (Henny Porten).
- This silent film concert by Stephan von Bothmer is part of the series of Berlin films at the Distel Theatre and part of the 24th Silent Film Concerts Festival 2027.
