Open Discussion on the Current Program of the IBB Video Room
The event series offers an open space for anyone interested in discussing films or sociopolitical issues in art and getting to know various artists and authors.
Together, participants watch selected videos and then read short excerpts on-site from essays, theoretical texts, stories, or poems in English or German that are related to the works in terms of content or form.
The subsequent discussion provides an opportunity to explore both the discursive threads of the video works and perspectives and questions raised by the group.
Based on the film “Aralkum” by Daniel Asadi Faezi and Mila Zhluktenko, participants will read excerpts in July from texts by cultural theorist Mark Fisher on the concept of “hauntology,” excerpts from the essay “The Great Delusion” by writer Amitav Ghosh, and passages from “Where Does The Myth Dwell?” by anthropologist Anastasia Galimova.
The film “Aralkum” explores the consequences of the drying up of the Aral Sea. Located in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, the body of water was once the fourth-largest inland lake on Earth. As a result of human destruction, it is now a barren desert landscape.
The texts explore how unregulated exploitation of resources has led—and continues to lead—to the long-term destruction of habitats, making the idea of a better future seem almost impossible.
How can people live in devastated landscapes? And what new images and narratives do they need in the arts to be able to imagine a future life amid the consequences of the climate catastrophe?
Since 2011, the IBB Video Room has been showcasing artists who work with time-based media. The program features works that address media-related as well as political and social issues. Particular emphasis is placed on giving space to marginalized perspectives and making the effects of power structures visible.
The event series is moderated by Louisa Engel, research intern for Education and Outreach. The sessions can be attended independently of one another. No preparation is required to participate. Whether you choose to actively participate in the discussion or simply listen, both are equally welcome.
Language: The event will be held in German and English. To facilitate discussion among participants, all attendees should have at least a passive understanding of both languages.
Participation is free; register online
