Secrets of an underestimated body fluid

Mucus is incredibly versatile, serving as a lubricant, adhesive, or protective barrier inside the body. Its seemingly simple structure makes mucus adaptable and thus indispensable for many bodily functions.

Biological mucus is mostly hydrogels and consists of little more than water arranged in molecular chains. If one of these essential mucus types fails, infections and other diseases can occur. This is another reason why hydrogels are becoming increasingly important in biomedical research.

The exhibition views mucus with mixed feelings. During sex, it’s generally not a problem, but if someone sniffs the mucus back up into their nose, people find it disgusting.

In this exhibition, visitors follow very different trails of mucus—biological, historical, cultural—and uncover the secrets of this underrated bodily fluid.

The exhibition is recommended for visitors ages 16 and up.
