The Ghosts of Hamlet

An Italian Hamlet? It actually existed: in the early 18th century, the Venetian Apostolo Zeno wrote his libretto *Ambleto*, drawing not on Shakespeare’s play but on the original medieval Danish source of the story. His text was set to music several times, but none of the operas has survived in its entirety.

Roberta Mameli and the musicians of Le Concert de l’Hostel Dieu have unearthed the surviving fragments from various European libraries and will present a little-known perspective on the legendary literary figure at the Pierre Boulez Saal.
