Special tour with Rudolf G. Scharmann, former director of the castle
From 1415 to 1918, the Hohenzollerns reigned as Electors of Brandenburg, Kings of Prussia and German Emperors. The permanent exhibition ‘The Prussian Royal Family’ at Charlottenburg Palace demonstrates that this rise to power would not have been possible without the female members of the dynasty.

More than any other Brandenburg-Prussian residence and garden complex, Charlottenburg in particular was shaped by the princesses. From 1695 onwards, almost all the apartments were furnished and garden areas laid out here.

Luise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1776–1810) captivated not only the heart of Frederick William III with her grace, beauty and natural charm during her lifetime. As an adversary of Napoleon and the mother of the first German Emperor, William I, she was fully elevated to the status of a myth in Prussian historiography following her untimely death. Auguste, Princess of Liegnitz (1800–1873), as Frederick William III’s second wife—married morganatically—was always in the shadow of her famous predecessor.
